North Caledonian League
A threadbare Fort William Football Club gave a good account of themselves as Halkirk United opened a gap of six points at the top of the North Caledonian League table with a 2-0 win.
The Lochaber side made the trip to a sunlit Caithness missing a plethora of players and needing to rely on trialists, as manager Kyle Redpath explained: “I can’t fault the boys for their performance and effort today.
“We travelled to Halkirk with nine signed players and had four trialists from the Thurso/Wick area who helped us out.
“Twenty-four players unavailable was always going to be a tough ask in any game but especially against the league leaders.
“However, we competed for the majority of the game and worked our socks off for 90 minutes.
“On another day with more players we could have got a result.
“We look forward to two home games where we have a good opportunity to pick up points.”
As it was, despite some outstanding performances from all the players, a goal from Sean Campbell, assisted by Mark Munro, was followed by a Sean Munro strike and this was enough to see off the Claggan Park travellers.
Chairman Rob Coull, who made the trip north, said: “I’d like to put on record my thanks to all the Fort William Football Club management team who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to get a squad together.
“The fact we were put in this position at this time of the season is ridiculous and I have to question the motivation and commitment of some of our own.
“For those that did make the long bus journey, they left everything on the park. The result could easily have gone our way if lady luck was on our side. We made it a tough day at the office for the league leaders.
“We face Clachnacuddin Reserves on Saturday and I’d like to see our fantastic support get behind the team in numbers.”
Saturday February 15 sees the visit of Clachnacuddin A, the Highland league outfit’s reserve side to contest the Simon Shields Memorial Trophy in memory of Simon, who played for both clubs.
Kick-off is at 1pm at Lochaber High School Astro.
