UHI Argyll Maritime lecturer Alice Moss-Lojera’s connection to the sea runs deep. Born into a maritime family, with a father who worked for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, and grandfather who served as an engineer in the Merchant Navy during World War II, Alice recalls a childhood shaped by maritime traditions.
Before coming to teaching, Alice had a fulfilling career in the big ship world. She spent a decade aboard cruise vessels, having started as a cadet and rising through the ranks from Junior Officer to more senior positions such as Chief Officer and Safety Officer. Her career saw her travel the world, from the vibrant ports of Cuba to picturesque canals of Paris, something she looks back on very fondly.
“I had the most amazing career. It’s a fantastic way to see the world, meet people, and earn a good living. I’d recommend it to anyone.”
Today, she brings her wealth of knowledge to the classroom, offering students on the NQ Maritime Skills course the opportunity to learn about the vast maritime industry, and develop the skills required to kickstart their career.
The hands-on course combines practical boat work, VHF radio use, chart work, and navigation, and allows absolute beginners to develop their skills and confidence out on the water.
Students have the opportunity to earn a suite of internationally recognised RYA qualifications, including Powerboat Levels 1 & 2, Essential Navigation, Day Skipper, First Aid and VHF Radio. All highly sought after qualifications which help to prepare students for employment on completion of the course.
When asked what’s so special about the course, Alice said:
“For anyone thinking about a career at sea we’ve got such a great training school on our doorstep here in Argyll. The course will coach you from absolute beginner level, so you don’t need to know anything about boats or the maritime world to get started. We take you right from the beginning to the point where you’ll feel confident driving a small powerboat and cover all the theory and background you need. There isn’t anywhere else around the West Coast of Scotland that offers this.”
Morne Bootsma, who studied on the course last year added:
“The Maritime Skills course is perfect for anyone who wants to go on to further maritime industries. It gives you a good test in the water to see if this lifestyles for you. It’s not like you’re thrown in at the deep end, the lecturers are slowly building you up and before you know it, you’re taking command. They’re very experienced in what they do.”
So, whether you’re thinking about a career at sea, or are interested in boating as a pastime the course is a great place to start.
