Ferguson Marine interim chief executive officer John Petticrew has announced the MV Glen Sannox will now be delivered at the end of September.
In his monthly update to MSPs, the shipyard boss confirmed additional work needs to be completed in “relatively small engine spaces” and that workforce congestion in these areas will delay the handover date, which was previously set for August 19.
Mr Petticrew said: “We have, regrettably, identified an additional number of areas which require to be completed on the vessel before we can proceed to acceptance trials. The majority of these works will have to take place in relatively small engine spaces, which are already delayed by the prolonged installation of the LNG system, due to the complexity of installation and the need to examine the integrity of the pipework.
“This will add to workforce congestion in these areas and, with that, a requirement to re-evaluate our work practices to maintain the highest standards of health and safety for staff and contractors, and to continue to achieve the highest standard of quality of work which we have delivered to date.
“As I’m sure you’ll agree, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our team is our number one priority, especially in an industry like this, where there is no room for half measures or cutting corners.”
Mr Petticrew said the delay of approximately five weeks would allow the company “breathing space to consider any unknown issues during LNG/owners trials and post-trial inspections”.
The cost implications for the delay has not yet being assessed, with Mr Petticrew adding final costings would be reviewed and MSPs would be updated on this once a re-forecast is complete.
The announcement comes after last month’s statement which said the vessel’s delivery date would need to be pushed back by three weeks to accommodate work required on the Liquefied Natural Gas system.
Speaking at the time, Mr Petticrew said: “We are working with CalMac and CMAL at the highest level to ensure there will be no further delays.”
