G & A Barnie Group in Fort William is not just growing. It’s building a legacy.
With ambitious plans for 2025, including a move to larger premises and further workforce expansion, this trusted provider of electrical, mechanical, plumbing and renewable energy services is proving that local expertise and a commitment to fostering new talent are a winning combination.
Founded in Wick in 1985 by Gordon and Alex Barnie, G & A Barnie is a family-run business deeply connected to the communities it serves. Over the years, the company has expanded considerably, growing to a team of over 400 employees at their head office and 10 branches throughout Scotland.
The Fort William branch, under the leadership of manager Craig MacPherson, offers a suite of building services in Lochaber, Argyll and throughout the Highlands & Islands, from plumbing and electrical to water technologies and renewable energy solutions for residential and commercial clients.
Their plumbing services range from routine maintenance and repairs to complex installations, ensuring efficient and reliable water and drainage systems. They handle everything from domestic wiring to large-scale industrial projects. With their commitment to a sustainable future, they also offer expertise in renewable energy technologies such as solar panel installations and heat pumps, helping clients reduce their carbon footprint and energy costs.
Craig expressed his enthusiasm for the future, stating, “We are looking forward to exciting times in Fort William with even more capacity to meet the needs of our customers while providing skilled employment and the chance of new apprenticeships in jobs which will always be in demand.”
G & A Barnie’s success story is being fuelled by its dedication to quality service and a strong connection to the local community. Last year alone, due to an increased demand for their services, the Fort William branch team nearly doubled, surging to a robust force of 16 dedicated professionals.
The additions include a wave of fresh talent, with three budding apprentice electricians, three fully qualified plumbers and a further two apprentice plumbers joining the ranks. This growth is a direct response to the increasing demand for their services, a testament to the company’s reputation for excellence and reliability.
The move to larger premises will also be a significant step in this continued expansion, not only providing the physical space necessary to accommodate the growing team but also enabling the company to streamline its operations, invest in new equipment and enhance the overall customer experience.
Apprenticeships keep the community powered
G & A Barnie Fort William branch is a now recruiting apprentice electricians, offering opportunities for young people to embark on well-paid and satisfying careers without having to move out of their communities. This is particularly important in the face of a national skills shortage in the trades sector. By actively recruiting young apprentices, the company is playing a crucial role in bringing up the next generation of plumbers and electricians. Craig believes in hands-on training, mentorship and creating a supportive environment where young people can thrive. This approach isn’t just good for the apprentices. It’s good for the entire community, ensuring a steady supply of skilled workers to keep homes and businesses running smoothly.
“We’re always on the lookout for talented and motivated young people to join our team,” Craig explained. “Electrical and plumbing skills are always going to be in demand, and we want to provide a clear pathway for local youth to build rewarding and lasting careers right here in Fort William.”
Building the Future
It’s clear that G & A Barnie Group is helping to build and maintain more than just structures. They’re building a brighter future for the Highlands & Islands, not just in their industry, but also across the community, with their support of good causes such as Lochaber Women’s Aid and the Rotary Club of Lochaber.
“Looking ahead to 2025 and beyond, we are deeply invested in the prosperity of our community,” said Craig. “We will continue to work to not just provide superior service to our customers, but to build opportunities, strengthen the economy and foster sustainable growth within our region.”
