The boating season is fast approaching, so it’s all hands-on deck to get ready for launching.
First off, co-ordinate launch dates with your boatyard and book any professional help required. It’s the busiest time of the year.
Set your workload list alongside tools and materials needed and concentrate on specific areas.
Topsides, hull and keel
Clean deck, topsides and polish repairing any chips in the gelcoat. A range of products and advice is on offer from all chandleries.
Inspect keel, rudder, skeg and propeller for signs of wear, particularly at the keel to hull joint. Ask professional help if anything looks suspect. Replace the anode if required. Grease shaft, steering cables and the log’s paddle wheel.
Antifouling
Wear fully protective clothing and a mask for scraping/sanding antifouling. Choice for reapplication depends on boat type, use and location of mooring or marina berth.

Bilges and seacocks
Inspect pump impellers and gaskets, grease and replace as required. With automatic bilge pumps, check the float switches work and the strum box is clear. Manual strum boxes should be pumped through to see hose is clear of blockages. Service all seacocks.
Cabin
Clean cabin, galley and cooker. Replace berth cushions and other items. Flush through the heads. Check heating system is working.

Safety equipment
Inspect fire extinguishers, flares, life-rafts, life-jackets replacing as needed. Liferafts need professionally overhauled. Display a safety inventory prominently on boat.

Get sails and sprayhoods checked, repaired or replaced as required.

Argyll showcases several world class sailing events in 2024.
Oban hosts the Clipper Round the World Yacht race from July 12-16th –the first time the race has stopped in Scotland in its 27-year history and a major coup for the town.
Eleven 70 ft yachts, each carrying 22 international crew, arrive at the North Pier pontoons after racing from Washington DC. The Clipper is an 11-month endurance sailing challenge of 40,000 nm, circumnavigating the world’s oceans.
BID4OBAN, Love Oban and Argyll and Bute Council partner with organisers Clipper Ventures to ensure everyone receives the warmest west coast welcome. A diverse range of attractions and activities will showcase the finest of Scottish hospitality.
Oban Sailing Club holds the WASZP Scottish Championships July 13-14, creating a ‘foiling’ spectacle in the Bay against the backdrop of the mighty Clipper Yachts.
Prior to this, Tarbert is the base for the internationally renowned Scottish Series from May 24-27 where a fleet of over 100 yachts enjoy world class racing on Loch Fyne.
And historic West Highland Yachting Week from July 27-August 2 is hosted by Craobh, Oban and Tobermory. Two days racing off each port, linked by passage races in between, make this unique regatta an all-time favourite on the west coast.
