Mull’s oldest inn is under new management who say they will reclaim the historic building’s original charm.
Thomas and Matthew Broom-Hughes, from Devon and Michigan in the USA originally, have been visiting Mull regularly for 15 years and are the latest owners of The Bellachroy in Dervaig.
Living in the hustle and bustle of London and having worked all over the world on airlines, in television and for firms in Silicon Valley, they decided that it was time to settle down on the island they have come to love.
So when they happened to spot that the Bellachroy was available, they snapped up the opportunity to buy it.
Thomas said: “Matt originally came to Mull on a diving trip, and I joined him. We instantly fell in love with Mull and came every single year.
“Then, last year, we decided to make a permanent move and happened upon the Bellachroy.
“We found it on a local website, so we came, stayed here and fell in love.”
In their 15 years of visiting Mull, the two are happy that the island and its people haven’t changed much. They say they are glad, however, to see that it has become more accessible, provided the ferries are running as scheduled, yet not overrun. They are awaiting their first tourist season with nervous excitement.
The Bellachroy’s beloved bar and restaurant, as well as the inn’s bedrooms, will be revamped under the new stewardship.
The pair have never run a business of their own before, but say they are excited to finally be their own bosses. Exercising that creative control, they will soon begin restoring the building.
Matthew said: “We plan on bringing it back to its former glory.
“The most recent owners have done a fantastic job, and we’ve become very good friends with them. They’ve also decided to remain in Dervaig.
“But there have, in the past, been a few regeneration projects that aren’t in keeping with age of the building and being sympathetic to its original charm.
“The Bellachroy is special to this village. We want to turn back the clock.”
While bringing back the original aesthetics are a big part of their plans, they say it will be done with a sustainable, environmentally-friendly approach.
Part of this plan includes working closely with local farmers, crofters and fisherman. Everything which possibly can come from a local producer, the pair aim to use.
The grounds around the Bellachroy will also be transformed into a kitchen garden, growing all the herbs and veg that will then be used in the business.
They also aim to implement a zero waste, seasonal and authentically Scottish approach to their menu.
Matthew said: “Tom and I have travelled the world, and its time for us to settle down and use what we have learned.
“We’ve always wanted to work in the hospitality industry.
“We want to run the Bellachroy until we retire and spend the rest of our lives here.”
