Three teams from Oban High School’s School of Rugby competed in the Scottish Power Energy Networks Championship (SPEN) run by Glasgow Warriors last week and qualified for the semi-finals for the first time ever.
The tournament – now in its eighth year – is one of the highlights of the award-winning community partnership between the electricity network operator and the professional rugby club.
It supports rugby at a grassroots level and creates a platform for aspiring rugby stars, while spotlighting STEM* opportunities to encourage students to think about a career beyond the game.
A total of 22 schools are battling it out this year, with Troon’s Marr College looking to defend its winning reign for another year.
Playing at Scotstoun Stadium, home of the mighty Warriors, three teams represented Oban High School/Oban Lorne RFC in S1 boys (Under 13), S2 boys (Under 14), and Under 14s girls categories on qualifying day with aggregate scores added up across all the teams.
Once the scores were tallied up the Oban outfit was declared the best collective team on the day and qualified for the semi-final in the process.
Murray Hamilton, principle teacher of PE at Oban High School said: "We played tough games against Inverclyde Academy, Largs Academy and Belmont Academy.
"It all came down to the final U14 girls match against Belmont which we managed to get a win in the last play of the game.
"The players, boys and girls, made the school and club very proud."
As the qualifying rounds are still in progress the draw and date for the semi-final has still to be announced. Oban will meet two other teams in the semis, playing both at each age group.
