Arran Ladies Hockey Team welcomed the ladies from Glasgow Academicals (Accies) III’s on Saturday at home on the Ormidale pitch.
Captain Lynda Fenton led out a full squad with Suzi Haddow in goals, Helen Thomson, Kaitlyn Haddow, Marie Craig and Lee Reid in defence. Lynda was in mid-field with Mia Walker and Susie Murchie. Anne Watts, junior club player Eirlys Bowen and Delyth (Del) Mair Jones took position as the team’s attacking forwards. Another junior club player, Connie Watts, waited for her turn as the substitute, playing in the second quarter.
Winning the coin toss, the visitors took first pass back and put the Arran mid-field and defence under immediate pressure. The Arran Ladies stayed calm and repelled the attack, reclaiming the ball and sending it back up field to the forwards. Both teams showed great passing, defensive blocks and accurate tackling - allowing the ball to move continuously back and forth on the pitch. Half way through the first quarter Mia set up to take a sideline ball and seeing a wall of Glasgow Accies players in front of her, executed a superb aerial lift, over the heads of the opposition, to drop the ball in front of Del who sprinted into the Accies goal area and shot a sideswipe ball past the keeper and into the goal.
Throughout the game, both sides worked hard to retain possession of the ball and shot at goal when they could. No shots were successful until the final quarter, when receiving a short corner penalty Glasgow Accies were able to equalise. The remainder of the match played out and the score remained 1-1 at the final whistle.
Retiring to the Brodick Golf Club for refreshments, Lynda announced that Del had been awarded Player of the Match by the Glasgow Accies ladies and Kaitlyn was nominated for a second consecutive week, as Dame of the Game by her teammates for her outstanding play. Thanks went to Pauline Reid for umpiring the match on the day.
Next weekend the Arran Ladies have a double header at the Ormidale Astroturf pitch. On Saturday February 22 they play host to Dumfries II’s, and on Sunday February 23 to Clydesdale Western VII’s.
Push back times are 12.45pm and 2.30pm respectively and any supporters who can go along to cheer on the team will be much appreciated and warmly welcome.
