It’s that time of year again.
Council Tax is increasing, and next year’s bills are due to arrive anytime now. Rents are going up and energy bills are due to rise as the energy price cap increases - again.
Food, travel, telecoms and broadband, prices endlessly only going in one direction – upwards! Then there’s the credit card bills, loan repayments, catalogues – payments that used to feel affordable, but not any longer.
For an increasing number of households, budgets are tight and another round of increases pile on even more pressure to already stretched budgets. For some households, it means further tightening their belts, but for other households, they simply can’t keep pace with the cost of living and at Citizens Advice they are seeing more people living in poverty.
The local Citizens Advice is working hard to provide free, independent and confidential advice and practical help to all types of households throughout Argyll and Bute. A free benefits check, a helping hand dealing with an energy supplier, or money and debt advice, Citizens Advice helpful friendly advisers can tailor support to your circumstances.
Citizens Advice understand that making that first telephone call or sending that first email seeking help can be quite difficult for many people. If that sounds familiar, you’re worried by the thought of higher bills, local Citizens Advice manager, Jen Broadhurst has this message for you.
“Everyday Citizens Advice advisers help people worried about their finances, worried about running out of money and really anxious about being chased for money.
Citizens Advice has trained advisers who understand the pressures people are under. They know how an unexpected bill can push people over the edge, they also know that money worries can also genuinely affect people’s mental health. At Citizens Advice, there’s no need to feel embarrassed about debt and money worries - it’s all part of what Citizens Advice is here to help with. Yes, we deal with housing, employment and consumer issues, but most commonly now we help with money-related advice.
When it comes to bills like Council Tax, if you’re struggling to keep up with payments, let us help you work through your budget and see what we can sort out. We might be able to arrange some breathing space to sort out your budget. We can even deal directly with recovery companies, such as Sheriff Officer, Walker Love, if they have been in touch with you.
If you’re struggling to keep up with energy costs or dealing energy debt, don’t face it alone, Citizens Advice advisers can help.
At Citizens Advice, we’ve heard time and time again that the advice and support given has helped people get on top of their budgets, sleep at night and even that our help has been life changing.
