Inveraray Burns Club's braw night out

Inveraray Burns Club held its 18th annual Burns Supper last Saturday January 28 at the Inveraray Inn.

 

Club president Reverend Roderick Campbell welcomed everyone to the supper before the haggis was piped in by Inveraray’s own Stuart Liddell MBE and 'cairted' by Tom Hill, a club member from Strachur.

 

The address was given in fine style by past president of the club Jim McMillan.

 

After enjoying an excellent dinner and a world-class piper’s selection from Stuart, an interesting Immortal Memory was proposed by Gerry Burke from Strachur, who focused on Burns’s journey to Inveraray in 1787 and the mystery that surrounded this trip.

 

The audience were enthralled by Gerry’s well-researched speech.

 

Music for the evening was provided throughout by duo Bletherskyte, Allan McMillan and Alex McCallum from Ayrshire, who have been coming up to entertain the club every year since the club’s inception and who always do a great job.

 

There were further songs from Phil Connor and a recitation of Holy Willie’s Prayer by Jim McMillan.

 

The Toast to The Lassies was given with great humour and style by Mid Argyll councillor Dougie Philand and the Rev Dorothy Wallace replied in similar vein to Dougie’s fine toast.

 

Following the Vote of Thanks from the President, the evening concluded with the company singing The Star O’ Rabbie Burns and Auld Lang Syne.

 

A Burns club spokesperson said: "A great night was had by all, 'And each took aff their several way, resolved to meet some ither day'."
