The talents of a young Inveraray-based manager have been celebrated at a glittering awards ceremony.
Aedan Doig’s work at the Loch Fyne Hotel and Spa was recognised earlier this month at the Highlands and Islands Thistle Awards which highlights examples of excellence in the tourism industry.
The former apprentice, now restaurant manager, was awarded the title of ‘Rising Star’ at the ceremony in Inverness’s Kingsmills Hotel on Friday October 4.
Since beginning his career in 2021 at the four-star hotel in Inveraray Aedan has completed his apprenticeship in hospitality and was awarded ‘Hospitality Apprentice of the Year’ for his outstanding performance.
The apprenticeship programme gives junior employees training in hospitality skills such as licensing, first aid, and customer service.
During his apprenticeship Aedan worked in all departments within Loch Fyne Hotel and Spa and benefited from a secondment to Balmoral Arms, another Crerar Hotels property.
Aedan began as a waiter, then progressed to deputy manager before, this summer, being promoted to restaurant manager.
He is now completing a management programme and will represent the Highlands and Islands at the national finals of the Thistle Awards in November.
General manager of Loch Fyne Hotel and Spa Niall O’Shaughnessy said: “Watching Aedan’s development and growth has been nothing short of inspiring. Since he first stepped through the doors, he has been enthusiastic, passionate and dedicated so I’m delighted that his hard work is paying off. He truly is a rising star.”
“I’m genuinely excited to witness where his career will take him, it is a pleasure to work with him, I’m sure the whole team will agree, and he should be very proud of what he has achieved in such a short time.
“The Highlands and Islands Thistle Awards are one of the most prestigious awards within this region so it’s no small feat.
"This also highlights just how crucial apprenticeship programmes are within our industry. He is the perfect example of how young people can join the hospitality sector and really excel thanks to the early talent initiatives we have in place.”
Two Islay businesses also received awards at the ceremony.
The prestigious five-star Glenegedale House guesthouse run by Graeme and Emma Clark won the Best B&B or Guest House Experience award.
They said on their social media: "It becomes harder over the years to maintain high standards and continue to improve and, to top it off, still to win awards.
"Thank you to everyone who supports us in so many different ways."
Another five-star venture, Islay Sea Adventures, was highly commended in the Best Visitor Attraction, which thanked all its customers and said it was "exceptional" to see all the talent the Highlands and Islands has to offer and "to be part of it all".
