Following on from the article in the Lochaber Times (Thursday October 10), health care support worker Joan MacKintosh has continued to spread the word about her forthcoming venture to Tanzania with the Vine Trust.
Joan, a heath care support worker at the Belford Hospital, was the guest speaker at last week’s Lochaber Rotary business lunch meeting.
In an absorbing 15-minute presentation, supported by illustrative slides, Joan expanded on her imminent trip to undertake voluntary work with the Trust in Tanzania, the largest country in East Africa.
The Vine Trust is an international development charity currently operating in Tanzania and Peru, supporting local projects and health systems for vulnerable families and communities – this work is driven by the Trust’s long-term partners and responds to what they need.
Joan explained that over the past 40 years, the Trust has connected over 1,800 health professionals and students to its partnership programmes in Tanzania and Peru.
“Many school, church and individual volunteers also visit ongoing projects in both countries, building schools and houses,” she said.
There are over 4,000 volunteers and I will soon be one of them!
“In November, I’ll fly to Mwanza to join the medical ship the Jubilee Hope for 14 nights, helping provide medical provision to a group of islands on Lake Victoria, the world’s largest tropical lake, over 200 miles wide in places.
”The islands that we will visit are in groups and we won’t know which ones we are going to until we arrive.
“The islands are fishing communities with very little, if any, access to medical care. 69% of healthcare workers in Tanzania are in urban settings but 73% of the population live rurally.
”Each day will be different and we won’t know exactly what to expect”
Club President Malcolm MacRaild thanked Joan for an excellent and informative talk and members responded with warm applause.
Joan is funding all her own travel costs but if you want to support the Vine Trust any donations to her page will go directly to the Vine Trust Jubilee Hope Medical Programme in Tanzania.
