Lochaber Phoenix Boxing Club held a successful Family Night in Caol Community Centre on Friday November 1 when members from age seven up demonstrated what’s involved in their weekly training sessions to family and friends.
Under the direction of head coach Aidan Donnelly, coach Charlie Anderson and trainee coach Peter Varley, the junior group of mainly primary school pupils were first to take the floor, going through a series of warm-up exercises, progressing to boxing moves.
As always, the youngsters had a great time, smiling their way through each section, before Aidan ended the session with a fun individual tug-of-war match with each boxer taking turns to pull against a similarly sized opponent.
Next it was the seniors’ turn to show off their prowess with the club’s 12 carded fighters taking centre stage. ’Carded’ means the members are licenced and recognised by national body Boxing Scotland.
They were introduced individually as they entered the hall, with their many successes listed.
Several of them already have bouts under their belts, holding national and GB titles - a credit to their ability and the high standard of training they receive in the Corpach gym.
Through the club’s affiliation with Boxing Scotland, some are also on the Pathways programme, attending training camps with Scotland squad coaches.
This has already led to several Lochaber boxers representing Scotland at home and abroad.
The seniors also started with warm-up exercises, including skipping, circuit training and skills development, before demonstrating individual moves and working together.
This culminated in carefully co-ordinated sparring, demonstrating the ring skills they have learned during long-term intense training.
Aidan Donnelly said: “Everyone who attends the club is dedicated and keen to learn and work with others in developing fitness and skills.
“It is always good to see someone coming in and making new friends.
“The gym is only open to participants during our regular sessions, so we organised this event to let parents, friends and family see for themselves what happens. Thank you to everyone who came along. The feedback was excellent.”
Club members are taking part in the Northern District Championships in Aberdeen later this month and in March next year the Home Show in the Nevis Centre will showcase the talents of Lochaber Phoenix Boxers against other clubs.
