Kerry beams her message from the ocean depths

The GRAB Trust’s Kerry MacKay has swopped her usual classroom-based workshops for the high seas over the next few weeks.

 

Setting sail on the tall ship Pelican of London, the intrepid scientist is bringing her message on avoiding littering the beaches of the West Highlands to schools and the community from the depths of the ocean instead.

 

Until mid-August Kerry is taking part in the of the Darwin200 sailing expedition, as part of the professional dive team.

 

She has been doing outreach to schools in Argyll in the run up to the summer holidays as well as stopping at bucket list locations like St Kilda, the Hebrides, Orkney, Shetland, and Bass Rock.

 

She said before boarding the tall ship in the middle of last month that she was ‘so excited’ to be joining the Darwin200 team.

 

‘I’m especially looking forward to scuba diving places like St Kilda and Shetland, doing underwater surveys and filming.’

 

This will be the second voyage Kerry has crewed on, as she was part of the Darwin200 UK Launch last year where she circumnavigated the UK.

 

The GRAB Trust will be working in partnership with the Darwin200 project, Marine Conservation, Society and several other ocean conservation organisations to supervise and conduct ocean research during the voyage.

 

Led by Young Scientists, there will be projects to record cetaceans, seabirds, and plastic pollution.

 

And Kerry says anyone can join in: ‘We want as many people as possible to share this experience with us; we have a crack team of camera professionals aboard who will capture all the adventures on deck, underwater, and with drones.

 

‘So follow the adventure on the GRAB Trust and Darwin200 social media pages. There will be epic videos, cutting edge science, live lectures, and lots of stunning scenery with amazing wildlife.’

 

Kerry will also be collecting and answering people’s questions throughout the voyage.
