A recycling cycles project is proving to be a big win for the Kilmory Castle based Argyll Countryside Trust (ACT).
reCycle refurbishes donated or unused bikes at its Lochgilphead workshop and then provides them to Argyll and Bute residents of all ages and abilities free as a way to help increase outdoor leisure activities, active travel to school and work and stop bicycles being dumped as waste.
A recent, very large, donation of children’s and young adults’ bicycles from Benmore Outdoor Centre in Dunoon has been keeping the project particularly busy.
Jamie Joyce, project manager, said: “These bicycles are very gratefully received from Benmore and we have already begun to get them prepared for distribution through the LiveArgyll Bikeabilty network which works with virtually every primary school in the [Argyll and Bute] local authority area.
“This partnership working allows targeted delivery of the bicycles where access to safe and fully serviced bicycles is limited.”
Where on-road cycle training is required reCycle supplies that as part of the free package of support along with helmets, lights, and tools.
The project is particularly keen to hear from adults at the moment, who can gain from the benefits of cycling, particularly as the day light increases; direct benefits such as physical and mental health improvements and the financial savings from not driving.
Jamie added: “A free bicycle and the accompanying support is all about encouraging a change in travel habits removing as many of the barriers as possible.
“It takes away some of the initial risk and commitment and looks to create life-long cyclists.”
ACT has received support for the project from Grants for All Community Project Transition Fund, the Argyll and the Islands Community Led Local Development Fund, and the HITRANS People and Place Programme.
To support the long term delivery of this initiative, ACT has expanded to include a fully-equipped and qualified bicycle and e-bike repair and servicing facility, catering to the growing popularity of electric bicycles.
This can be found beside the ACT MAKI Pups Outdoor children’s nursery in the grounds of Kilmory Castle.
