Kintyre Schools Pipe Band endured a torrential thunderstorm at Gourock Highland Games on Sunday – but members didn’t mind getting soaked as they beat eight other entrants to win the novice contest.
Gourock in May is a favoured destination for pipe bands looking to kick start their outdoor season.
There were 40 Scottish bands in attendance, along with a visiting band from the USA.
Drenched Pipe Major Fiona Mitchell said afterwards: “I’m super proud of the team for putting in a fantastic performance and winning their section today at Gourock Highland Games.
“This was the first competition for many of our players, so it was a great start and a huge boost for the season ahead.
“Thank you to Argyll Bakeries and Tesco Campbeltown for their support on the day.”
The band now looks forward to competing at the Scottish Pipe Band Championships at Dumbarton in July, at the European Championships in Perth and the World Championships in Glasgow, both in August.
Before that, Kintyre’s young pipers and drummers will be appearing next week at Campbeltown Malts Festival and at the Mull of Kintyre Half Marathon and 10k Race.
They will also be putting on a street performance – weather permitting – in Main Street on Saturday May 25 at 7pm, to which everyone is welcome to attend.
