Learning curve at Ladies World Sevens for Helen and Abi

Rugby stars Helen Nelson and Abi Evans were part of the Scotland Women 7’s squad who became the first guest side to record a victory on this year’s World Series at the weekend.

 

The win came in the final match when tries from Megan Gaffney, Lisa Thomson, Rhona Lloyd and Helen, who also added three conversions, led to a 26-14 victory against Ireland.

 

Helen, from Glencoe, captained the squad who were invited to take part in the tournament following a successful season last year in the Rugby Europe Grand Prix season.

 

Commenting after the final game, Helen said: ‘It’s been a great weekend for us.

 

‘Some tough matches, but we’ve learnt a lot and have improved over the weekend.

 

‘To get a win in our final game against Ireland shows a lot of character and fight in the squad. We’ve all had a great weekend.’

 

On day one, the Scots were well beaten by New Zealand in their competition opener, losing 44-7, before recovering to draw 24-24 with England then losing 31-15 to Russia.

 

‘It was an amazing experience to test ourselves at the highest level,’ said Oban’s Abi Evans.

 

‘I feel like I’ve gained a lot of experience and we got to see how much potential we have as a squad. I am very excited for the future.

 

USA won the Biarritz tournament which was the last in the 2018/19 HSBC Sevens Series which was won overall by Fiji.
