Clachan woman Lee Bastow has put her best foot forward for Kintyre’s Mairi Semple Cancer Fund, raising thousands of pounds by completing two Kiltwalks this year.
Scotland’s largest mass participation walking event, Kiltwalk was launched by Sir Tom Hunter to raise funds for Scottish charities and projects, and is held annually with various walk lengths, locations and dates to choose from.
Lee took on not one but two walks this year, completing 15 miles at the Glasgow Kiltwalk in April, and almost 12 miles at the Edinburgh event last Sunday.
She took on the mammoth challenge in aid of the Mairi Semple Cancer Fund, which provides financial support to Kintyre residents suffering from any type of cancer.
“I have wanted to do a Kiltwalk for a few years and finally decided to book my ticket,” said Lee. “The only stipulation of doing the walks is that you actively raise money for charity – any charity.
“I chose the Mairi Semple Cancer Fund as it is close to home and we have attended their Christmas walk with our horses previously.
“It’s a great local charity run by a great bunch of volunteers. The money raised benefits people in our area and doesn’t go to a national pool or pay wages. Every penny goes to those who need help!”
With Gift Aid included, Lee has so far raised more than £3,300, which will provide a huge boost for the charity that gives out tens of thousands of pounds each year.
She said: “I can safely say that I, or rather we, have achieved in fundraising a fantastic amount. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who donated and left messages, whether it was anonymous or not. It really is appreciated!”
Fiona Macalister from the Mairi Semple Cancer Fund said: “We can’t thank Lee enough for thinking of us and also putting herself through the walks! We are so very grateful.”
