Ceòl a’ Chaisteil from Castlebay on Barra were crowned the under 13 champions in the Battle of the Bands last night.
The competition, which also saw Bun-sgoil Thaigh An Uillt (Taynuilt Primary School) Seòid (Portree, Skye) and Cèilidh Club Ard-sgoil Loch Abar (Lochaber) display some incredible musical talent, suggests these youngsters all have a bright musical future ahead of them.
A packed venue erupted as Ceòl a’ Chaisteil went up to collect their trophy. The band was a member short at the Royal National Mòd in Oban, with one performer away on their half-term holiday in Gran Canaria.
The group, which has only been together for about a year, were swamped with praise from parents and grandparents, who told us they were “blown away” by the kids’ performance tonight.
Barbra MacNeil Smith, mum of one of the performers, said: "Coming from Barra, music is in our blood. We’re super proud of our little team.”
Their teacher Anne-Marie MacLean added: “It’s an amazing result, this will really help them keep the music in them alive.”
Adjudicator Alasdair Whyte said that all the performers had "brìgh - the essence of song" within them, and his fellow Adjudicator Eilidh Cormack agreed.
Alasdair continued: "I hope they all keep playing together. It’s not just about winning, it’s about what you get out of playing the songs together as a group, learning from one another."
Eilidh said: "I think they’re all very talented, everyone on the stage was very keen.
"A that stage, they’ve already developed their own styles, they are a real credit to their teachers."
Both agreed that the new Battle of the Bands format from An Comunn Gàidhealach is a massive improvement, and will keep the musical talent of the winners flourishing for years to come.
Here is the winning performance from Ceòl a’ Chaisteil.
