A Gruffalo trail, book sales, and guessing the number of mini books in a jar were amongst the activities held in libraries across Lochaber as they joined in the High Life Highland (HLH) library fundraising week from March
10-16.
Thanks to their activities and keen supporters, Lochaber’s libraries raised £500 in cash donations across the six days, with further money for the cause donated online.
Ardnamurchan Library was a hive of fundraising activity during the event, with the Sunart Singers playing their part by holding an evening performance, while visitors throughout the week attempted to guess the number of Lego pieces in a jar in order to win a box of chocolates.
The library’s book sale also unearthed a surprise when a first edition of JK Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix was found.
HLH has said it is looking at options of what to do with the valuable discovery, including a possible raffle or auction later in the year to raise additional funds.
Mallaig too invited people to guess the number of objects in a jar, but had aptly managed to fill its vessel with mini books, with one participant getting their guess spot on.
Meanwhile, Caol Library maintained traditional library rules by hosting a silent auction.
Hunters of the Gruffalo could be found in Mallaig, Ardnamurchan, Fort William and Kinlochleven, with customers challenged to find and answer ten questions around the library.
Fort William was another book sale host, and handmade crafts - including crocheted bookmarks - and sweet treats were available across the region as people reached into their pockets to help.
HLH expressed its thanks to everyone who showed support during the week, and said it hoped that the work would ensure that libraries continued to serve as invaluable community hubs and offer resources and activities for all ages.
Donations to libraries, as well as other HLH educational programmes, can still be made at shop.highlifehighland.com/collections/donate.
