Efforts have been made behind the scenes to make the evening entertaining, bringing folk out to watch the switch-on and get everyone into the Christmas spirit, after the low key lights of the last few years.
Provost Dougie Philand and Deputy Provost Jan Brown, Mid Argyll’s councillors, - arriving in a ’special vehicle’ - will flick the switch on Lochgilphead Christmas Lights Festival on the Front Green on Saturday November 30, with a count down before the lights are switched on at 6pm.
But the fun gets underway at 5pm, with shops and cafés staying open late and The Community Shop dispensing mulled wine and mince pies to keep out the cold.
There will be live performances from the Forget Me Not Choir, Loch Fyne Pipe Band and high school and primary school pupils.
The drama group from Mid Argyll Youth Development Services (MAYDS) will sing songs from this year’s pantomime.
Santa will also be on hand to deliver some “ho ho ho,” good cheer and sweets.
Entries from a Christmas poster competition for primary pupils will be on display in the old Hydro Electric Shop in Lorne Street.
A Christmas lights committee got together earlier this year and has been working hard to raise funds to buy new lights which have been purchased thanks to donations from individuals, groups and organisations.
A number of old lights have been refurbished and now the town will have in excess of 40 festive lights.
A Just Giving page is still live, with the current total standing at £565.
Next year’s display promises to be even bigger and better, with a £7,000 grant from the Nadara A’Chruach Wind Farm Community Fund being awarded this month.
Previously the town was relying on the good will of MacLeod Construction Ltd, D A MacDonald Contractors Ltd and George MacNaughton to put up the lights and trees.
