You may have read in the news of late that ear wax removal is of great importance, but why?
Generally speaking, ear wax is a beneficial thing. It is a typical greasy material that aids in outer ear protection. Most people’s ear wax eventually falls out of their ears on its own, but for some, it accumulates and needs to be professionally removed.
Every year, almost 2.3 million people in the UK need their ear wax removed professionally. In addition, older people, hearing aid users, and people with learning disabilities are disproportionately affected. Unwanted ear wax can cause symptoms, including tinnitus, ear pain and hearing loss if it is not removed.
Self management of ear wax
It should be noted that while self management kits for home treatment can be purchased from pharmacies and online, none are currently recommended by NICE, The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence.
Regardless of the effectiveness of self management, it will not be suitable for many people who require wax removal, including those who have significant cognitive impairments or limited manual dexterity.
Oban is in an enviable situation as it has a clinic right on its doorstep. Argyll Ear Wax Removal. Gill Fairclough RN, opened the clinic in Oban last year and wanting to raise awareness during National Hearing Day, Gill spoke to the Oban Times about her background and experiences.
She said: ‘I am a registered nurse with over 40 years of experience working in the NHS and I gained experience of syringing ears for wax removal using various water irrigation methods. I attended a certified training course for health professionals in January 2023 to develop the skills and knowledge required for microsuction.
‘As ear syringing became less available through GP practices last year, the only options for people suffering with reduced hearing or earache caused by a build-up of wax was to wait several months for an appointment with the NHS, travel further or revert to some dangerous home remedies. After being made aware of this problem I set up as an independent practitioner in April 2023 after gaining the qualification required.’
Gill continued with some harrowing stories: ‘Since starting the clinic I have removed cotton buds from ears and also seen trauma to ear drums from hair grip use.
“On the market today, there is a gadget that is proving popular with people that has caused a few problems. People can use it to see into the ear, which is fine, but there is a scoop on it which encourages people to dig out the wax. What I am seeing is that the scoop has in fact pushed the wax out of reach and deeper into the ear making it more difficult to remove, also increasing the risk of trauma to the inner ear.
“I have treated people after they tried candling with no benefit. The NHS is quite clear that there’s no evidence that ear candles or ear vacuums get rid of earwax and the procedure brings its own risks. I’ve also heard of somebody pouring hot water into the ear expecting it to melt the wax.’
’ Excellent service from Gill, I had my 6 year old in for was removal and she was very patient made him feel comfortable and relaxed, my 6 year old is usually highly nervous and he was great with Gill, 5 star service.’
- A review from a concerned parent
’Would highly recommend Gill at Earwax removal. Although my ears were clear, Gill was very friendly and explained everything to us thoroughly. Would use again, thank you’
