A group of youngsters from Mallaig Rugby Club attended the Six Nations rugby match between Scotland and Ireland at Murrayfield on Saturday February 8.
Even Scotland’s defeat at the hands of the Auld Enemy could not dull their excitement at getting to attend such a big sporting event, which drew a capacity crowd.
Mallaig Rugby Club is the free youth organisation set up by mental health charity Ewen’s Room. Every Sunday morning, local volunteer coaches put a nursery aged group through their paces at Mallaig Astro Pitch, followed by a primary aged section.
The group started in September 2023 following the success of Ewen’s Room Acharacle Youth Rugby Club. The community immediately took it to its heart, with more than 21 children signing up within the first two weeks.
There have been fantastic local fundraising efforts and the sponsorship of local café Jac-O-Bites, whose support meant the group could buy a tackle bag which has been used to the max. The club has also received funding through the Children and Young People’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Fund.
A club spokesperson said: “It’s helped children to make friends outside of their school peer groups, helped increase their confidence and discover a new skill set."
With the backing of Scottish Rugby, the club obtained eight tickets to the Scotland v Ireland at Murrayfield.
The spokesperson added: “The excitement amongst those with tickets was fantastic. Most of the children had never been to a rugby match, let alone an international event such as the Six Nations.
"They soaked in the amazing atmosphere in the stadium and cheered on the players of both teams as they scored tries. They also got to meet with Scottish Rugby mascot Nessie. This special trip will inspire our club for months to come."
Ewen’s Room was established in 2008 after Ewen Gillespie tragically took his own life, leading his family to establish the charity focused on mental health and wellbeing in his memory. It is a small but ever-growing cause, with the advancement of better mental health for those living in the Highlands at its core.
The charity offers support to those struggling with their mental health, raises awareness of such issues and aims to reduce stigma in communities.
It offers weekly open sessions across Lochaber, where people can have a cuppa and share in good company while those who prefer to chat whilst enjoying the outdoors can join in the group’s regular organised Whatever The Weather Walks.
