Duggie and Margaret MacNeill are stepping down as landlords of Tarbert’s Corner House pub this week and can hold their heads up high when it comes to raising much-needed funds for charity.
The pair have helped to raise almost £24,000 over the last decade to help improve the lives of people with Parkinson’s.
Duggie himself has Parkinson’s but this has not stopped he and Margaret holding regular fund-raising quizzes, race nights and other events, raising thousands of pounds in just one night on several occasions, for many charities including Parkinson’s UK.
In doing so the couple have received praise from Parkinson’s UK.
Julie Ionta, community fundraiser for Parkinson’s UK, said: “We’re grateful to Margaret and Duggie for their incredible support over the years and for the generosity of the community of Tarbert.
“Every penny raised boosts our work providing support for people living with Parkinson’s right across Scotland.
“We can’t thank everyone enough for their kindness and we wish Margaret and Duggie all the very best as they step back from the Corner House.”
Looking back over the last decade of fundraising, Duggie and Margaret are overwhelmed by the generosity of their friends and neighbours in Tarbert.
Margaret said: “It’s all been great fun and with the added bonus of raising funds for Parkinson’s UK. We cannot put into words how grateful we are for the generosity of the local community and our regulars at the Corner House.”
There has been more fundraising for Parkinson’s UK from within the community of Tarbert.
Kenny MacNab completed an epic 200-mile walking challenge earlier this year, raising more than £5,000.
Norma Jean Brice-Bruce and Graham Stephen took part in Kiltwalk Glasgow, running most of the way, and raising £700.
“Walking several hundred miles and taking part in the Kiltwalk are serious achievements,” said Julie.
“Kenny, Norma Jean and Graham should be proud of their accomplishments and raising incredible amounts for Parkinson’s UK.
“Their dedication means a great deal to us.”
Margaret, who recently celebrated 50 years at Tarbert Pharmacy where she continues to work, and Duggie announced their intention of retiring as landlords of the popular watering-hole earlier this year after 11 years as leaseholders.
Prior to this Duggie managed the bar with owner Moira Mcdonald for 12 years. Duggie is planning to take some time out and enjoy life.
The pub is now up for sale for £350,000.
Margaret said earlier this year that they would like to see the pub go to someone interested in the community and keep it as a hub for the community.
"We will miss seeing everyone, we have made a lot of friends."
