Before his visit to Oban next week, legendary Celtic manager Martin O’Neill has spoken about his excitement to come to the town for the first time.
At The View on Friday November 8, your chance for a conversation with Martin O’Neill is waiting.
O’Neill is a man that needs no introduction to football fans, part of the legendary Nottingham Forrest team that went back to back in the European Cup in 1979 and 1980, and the manager to win Celtic a domestic treble in the 2000/01 season.
His highlights with the hoops are the stuff of legends. During a five year stay he won three league titles, three Scottish Cups and a League Cup.
He even got Celtic to their first European final in decades, only falling to an extra time goal from José Mourinho’s Porto.
Now out of the game for five years, O’Neill has been travelling the country, talking about his incredible career and meeting fans.
Next Friday at The View, he will tell all his best stories and answer the audience’s burning questions, but most of all, he’s excited to meet the Celtic contingent of the west coast.
Martin O’Neill said: “I’m really looking forward to being in Oban. These nights have proved very enjoyable – being able to engage with fans, do some Q&A and tell some stories – and it all reminds me of how much I enjoyed my time at Celtic.
“In truth, my five years at the club flew by, but we packed quite a lot in in terms of incidents and – dare I say – some achievements. And I now admit, when I first pitched up in Glasgow in the early summer of 2000, little did I really know what I was in for.
“But it’s special club, with a very special fan-base. And I’m told up Scotland’s west coast, in places such as Oban and the outlying isles, there is quite a strong Celtic following, so I’m looking forward to meeting the fans. I think we’ll have a good night.”
The evening’s host is journalist and broadcaster Graham Spiers, winner of Scotland’s sports journalist of the year four times.
He said: “I’ve done a few of these ‘in conversations’ with Martin O’Neill and they have reinforced to me how beloved he remains among the Celtic support. In Glasgow last summer at one such event a fan stood up and said, ‘Martin, as a Celtic fan, you gave me the best five years of my life.’ I’ve heard this more than once. The O’Neill years appear to be cherished by the Celtic support.
“Martin has some great Celtic stories to tell – about Neil Lennon, Chris Sutton, Henrik Larsson, Paul Lambert, Stylian Petrov and more – so I hope to tease these out of him. Personally, I’m looking forward to Oban, a town I’ve been to many times. Though this, I believe, will be Martin’s first visit.”
Tickets to book your spot at The View are £30 and can be found on the venue’s website.
