The second competition of ‘Golf Week’ was a four-person Texas Scramble on Friday, with 13 teams playing from the yellow tees.
Despite a thick fog descending on the course on the morning of the competition, not all teams lost their way, as shown by the returned scores.
Coming in first place were Dougie Mitchell, Cameron McGeachy, Kevin Allibone and Andrew Wallace, who shot a nett 49. Their putters must have been hot when they recorded an outward nine of -8, and an inward nine of -4, minus their team handicap of 9 shots.
Texas Scramble results: 1 D Mitchell, C McGeachy, K Allibone, A Wallace - 49 (overall winners); 2 M Paterson, G Grant, D McGeachy, J Lafferty - 52; 3 J Rennie, I Johnstone, D Johnstone, I MacAlister - 53.
The club's highly regarded May AM-AM, held last Saturday, was the final contest of ‘Golf Week’, with 27 teams competing in the four-person better-ball team event.
In first place was ‘Lightning Doesn’t Strike Thrice?’ who carded the winning round of nett 53.
This team, consisting of Andrew Wallace, Mitch Graham, Michael McKinlay and Cameron Wylie, have now won the May AM-AM for the third consecutive year in a row.
Each of the players featured evenly on the scorecard, but it was their last-minute substitute, Cameron Wylie, who came up trumps with some well-holed 15-foot putts to secure nett birdies at the 13th, 17th, and 18th holes, which put them across the line.
In addition to vouchers, the winning team received four bottles of 10-year-old whisky, courtesy of Springbank Distillery.
“We would like to thank the main sponsor, Springbank Distillers, and all other sponsors who provided the prizes for this event,” said a Machrihanish Golf Club spokesperson. “Without their support, we would be unable to run competitions like this at our golf club.”
