Mid Argyll RFC 17 Glasgow University Medics 14
West Region – Division 3
Last Saturday Mid Argyll men’s team began a run of six weeks of consecutive games.
First up was a visit from Glasgow University Medics who narrowly put the Boars out of the Bowl competition back in October and right from the start Saturday’s encounter had the makings of a real battle.
Mid Argyll failed to capitalize on some early chances, and it was the Medics who opened the scoring and then added the extras.
This galvanised the home team and they applied the pressure moving the ball around and keeping the play going. It wasn’t long until the Boars were level.
Brothers, Innes and Calum Paterson charged down the wing, Innes drawing the defender before releasing Calum, who still had work to do beating two more defenders to cross over and then score under the posts. Murray MacDonald added the conversion and the score was level.
The next score went to Mid Argyll also. Great work from the breakdown, where the Boars dominated all day, saw Dan Broderick power over from 5m out knocking defenders over as he went. No conversion this time.
This was how the first half finished, and the Boars knew there was much more to come from them to continue a good winning streak.
Despite Mid Argyll having the majority of the possession, the referee was determined not to let the game flow. Medics took advantage of this broken play and added to their score with a try and conversion.
Changes were made in the home team, and a re-energised pack again showed their dominance only to be penalised consistently for being stronger than the opposition.
With time running out Ben Smith crossed for the last try of the game and gave the lead back to the home side despite no converted extras.
In the dying seconds the Medics launched one last attack to snatch the game, but they came up against Calum Paterson, who held on to slow the attack until Ben Smith smashed the player into touch allowing the ref to blow full time.
This was a hard-fought win for the Boars which takes them to fourth in the league with three games in hand over the second and third placed clubs.
Everyone at Mid Argyll gave a massive thanks to neighbours Oban Lorne RFC, who provided a few players to bolster the squad with a few regulars missing.
Corrie Louw, George Ritchie, Luke Plummer and Blair MacFarlane all had great games and really contributed to this great morale-boosting win.
Mid Argyll’s Fyne Ales Man of the Match was Calum Paterson for an amazing all-round performance.
The club would like to thank its amazing home support and all of its sponsors.
