Mid Argyll Ladies 14 V Dunfermline Ladies 32
National Bowl
Mid Argyll RFC Ladies took on Dunfermline RFC Ladies in the National Bowl competition on Sunday February 16 at the Ropework Park.
It was the ladies’ first full 15 aside game played through 80mins of rugby and marks a massive leap forward in the team’s development.
Until now the team has competed in development games to gain experience and that showed through with a great performance. The ladies put everything into this game, playing beyond anything they have so far.
The match was an even contest at the start but Dunfermline used their size and experience to bully themselves over the Mid Argyll try line for the opener.
However, Mid Argyll hit back straight away with a first senior try for Lyndsey Martin. Good work from Iona Campbell opened a space for Martin to break through after she collected the ball.
Despite a frantic chase from the visitors they weren’t going to deny Martin as she powered over. Campbell added the conversion and Mid Argyll drew level.
With the confidence of a score came some real quality play from the home team and soon later Jemma Matthews broke through the defence and charged home from 22 metres out to add a second, also converted by Campbell, putting Mid Argyll in front.
Before half time Dunfermline had added two unconverted tries to take a narrow lead into the break, 14-17.
In the second half Mid Argyll never managed to get to the levels of the first period but they fought all the way and despite the score finishing 14-32, there were lots of positives for the coaches to build on.
Martin picked up the Fyne Ales player of the match award, but the whole team can be very proud of the effort and performance they put into this game.
Everyone has progressed immeasurably in the last 6-12 months, said the coaches. "If the squad can pull together and build on this, then the team’s first win is surely just around the corner.
"A big thank you to everyone who helped with food, pitch side, Eilidh for the photos, Dunfermline for travelling to us, to the ref and especially our team sponsors CRF Hydro, Glic and AKVA group."
