Last Sunday saw the first league outing of the season for the Mid Argyll RFC Ladies’ rugby team.
The aspiring league puts developing teams together to play small-sided games where the ladies can gain valuable experience against teams at a similar level.
In last weekend’s league the Boars were joined by East Kilbride and Greenock Wanderers.
Nine ladies made the journey and took part in what turned out to be a successful day for them.
First up were Greenock Wanderers and the ladies played some good attacking rugby in a hard-fought contest.
Tries from Kirsty Gibson and Beck Palmer ensured a first win for the Boars ladies 10 - 0.
The second game was against hosts East Kilbride. With a very strong home squad this game was more of a challenge for the Mid Argyll outfit.
The final score was 10-26 to the home team, but with another two tries for Mid Argyll - one from Palmer and one from a borrowed player - this was a successful first outing.
Coach Katie Ritchie was very pleased with the teamwork and effort the ladies put into the game and was happy to see all the training pay off in a game.
The ladies now look forward to a home festival this Sunday September 8, at 12 pm at the Ropework in Lochgilphead.
On Sunday September 1, Mid Argyll U14 Boys travelled to Paisley to begin their campaign in the West league. The team comprised 7 Mid Argyll players, 4 Kintyre and 3 Mull.
With many of the boys playing their first season of competitive league rugby, being introduced to new age grade variations and playing new positions, it was always going to be a tough day at the office.
The team pulled together from the first whistle but struggled to keep up with Paisley’s pace in the first 20 minutes, going four tries down very early on.
The boys dug deep and showed some great skill in the second 20 minutes of play, dominating much of the game with fast attacking phases, quick hands and support players taking the ball at speed, enabling them to cross the line three times in quick succession.
It was a long day of travelling, but the Mid Argyll team thoroughly enjoyed their rugby and showed great promise for the rest of the season. A big thank you went to Paisley RFC for their hospitality.
The U14 Boys look forward to their first home game of the season at the Ropework Park, Lochgilphead, on September 15.
Also on Sunday, the Mid Argyll RFC Minis travelled to Mull for their first Dalriada of the season – being short on players didn’t phase the teams, which were full of drive and enthusiasm.
Everyone put all of their knowledge into the games and came away with plenty of food for thought for future games.
Mid Argyll joined Etive Vikings in both sections and p6/7 had a helping hand from two players, either Oban or Mull in each of their games.
P4/5s won all their games with Mid Argyll’s two players scoring plenty of tries.
P6/7 had a harder set of games as they were all new to the age group, leading to losing three games and drawing one.
The extra help from the more experienced Oban and Mull players really helped the team to gain confidence throughout the day, with everyone playing a large part in getting the ball up the pitch.
A big thanks went to Isle of Mull RFC for hosting the first Dalriada of the season; the hospitality was great as usual.
