Mid Argyll 14 Waysiders Drumpellier 55
Pre-season friendly
Mid Argyll’s senior men took on Waysiders Drumpellier in a final warm up match last Saturday at the Ropework before the new season starts this weekend.
The Boars knew this would be a tough test with the visitors being in the league above them, but they also looked forward to the challenge and the opportunity to test themselves against West 2 opposition.
Sporting their new “JOLOMO” sponsored changed strip, the Argyll men certainly looked the part as they took to the field in only their second warm up game of the summer.
Mid Argyll kicked off towards the pavilion end and applied good early pressure to have the Coatbridge team on their heels in the opening stages.
A penalty to the visitors on 10 minutes and a great kick from the winger got them into the home 22 and from the lineout Mid Argyll were caught drawn into cover the centre of the pitch. Quick ball out to the wing saw WD go over for the opening try but then miss the conversion.
The Boars stuck in and didn’t allow the game to slip away from them, though the structure of the more experienced team was easy to see.
They held their positions well, and in the end, this paid off for them as they went into half time 26-0 scoring just before the break, following a yellow card for second row Ben Rusden, despite continual warnings from the referee and his own captain Murray Sutherland.
The second half started well but with sustained pressure from the visitors, which built up to their next try 10 minutes after the restart. A scrum out wide and the ball was bulldozed over from close range and the conversion was made.
It wasn’t long before the next try came for WD on the opposite side of the pitch from a scrum and an overlap on the blind side allowed them in.
From the re-start Mid Argyll started to show what they can do with the ball in hand when they spread it out wide.
A great passage of play was finished off when full back George Ritchie collected a great one-handed pass from brother Dougie, to beat two defenders and cross for the Boar’s opener. Muz MacDonald added the extras, and the home team were finally on the score sheet.
WD quickly hit back when they caught the boars defence napping and the 9 went through to score.
This time from the restart it was Mid Argyll’s turn to offer a quick reply, and not to be out done by his brother, Dougie Ritchie went over for the home team’s second of the day, again converted by MacDonald.
Waysiders added two more tries before the end of the game to run out comfortable winners, though the Argyll team really showed what they are capable of when they control the pace of the game.
Final score was Mid Argyll 14 – Waysiders Drumpellier 55.
Man of the Match went to Dougie Ritchie for a great all-round performance.
The league opener is this Saturday August 24 at home against Paisley RFC, KO 3pm. The Boars are hoping for a big crowd to cheer them on in what promises to be an exciting season them.
