The ladies of Southend SWI received an enlightening talk about life growing up in South Africa, thanks to Reverend Steven Sass, who was the group’s latest guest speaker.
Steven, who is currently the Church of Scotland minister for the South Kintyre Parish, explained to the ladies that he and his brother were brought up in Paarl in the Western Cape of South Africa in a very happy and peaceful Christian home.
His father was an English speaking gentleman, while his mother spoke local language Afrikaans.
There are 12 official languages in South Africa, including one sign language, of which Steven can speak three fluently, with another two he can understand.
At the age of six, he went to the local government school. He explained that, after the fall of apartheid, there were many changes. He was in the school cadet band class C and then Republic Festival Army Cadets doing military training from an early age. He also played the base drum.
“Steven admitted that, as a young boy, he was a bit mischievous and always up to something he should not be doing!” said an SWI spokesperson.
“After answering lots of questions very amusingly, Kathleen Martin thanked Steven, on behalf of the group, for giving us an insight into life in a country completely different to Scotland.
“Steven is going to Betty’s Bay in South Africa for Christmas for a well-deserved rest.”
