The excitement is palpable as the 19th Mull of Kintyre Half Marathon and 10k Run draws near. Runners from around the world are busy training so they can display their top form on the track and experience the thrill of pushing their limits…
Established in 2006, MOKRun has been voted as the UK’s top race in Runner’s World magazine multiple times, and spots usually sell out fast. It takes place the last weekend in May after the Campbeltown Malts Festival, making this a much-anticipated week on the local calendar. The event not only showcases the athleticism of participants, but also highlights the unity and spirit within the Kintyre community.
With fun activities and music planned all weekend, MOKRun 2024 promises fun-filled moments for everyone to enjoy.
Whether runners are aiming for a podium finish or simply looking to have a great time at the after race ceilidh, everyone is getting ready for an unforgettable experience that celebrates the essence of Kintyre.
From Juniors to Veterans to Vintage categories, this event is accessible for various levels of runners. But no matter the race, what each athlete has in common is the desire to challenge themselves, set new personal records, and bask in the sense of accomplishment that comes with crossing that finish line. The energy at the event is infectious, with participants cheering each other on every step of the way. It’s not just a race- it’s a celebration of health, wellness and the spirit of camaraderie. Each finisher is rewarded with a generous goody bag that includes a locally hand made Campbeltown pottery medal, MokRun t-shirt and more.
To get involved on the other side of the racing tape, additional marshals and volunteers are always welcome to contact John Galbraith, Eilidh Macalister or Gail Williams or get in touch by emailing events@mokrun.com. The MOKRun committee is calling on the usual volunteers to help with packing goodie bags for the event to gather at Kintyre Community Education Centre on Thursday May 23.
Bibs with race numbers and timing chips have been posted out to competitors for the adults’ and children’s races, and anyone who did not receive theirs is asked to email events@mokrun.com.
The fun starts on Saturday May 25 at 2pm with the Junior races on Kinloch Green. Nicola McKerral will coach around 200 youngsters through their warm-up at 1.45pm, after which they will complete various distances across five age groups, with mascot MOK Coo on hand to cheer them on.
The Junior events include: one lap (500m) for five to six-year-olds; one lap for seven to eight-year-olds; two laps (1km) for nine to 10-year-olds, three laps (1.5km) for 11 to 12-year-olds; and four laps (2km) for 13 to 14-year-olds.
Trophies for the first, second and third placed girl and boy in each category will be presented at a prize giving on Kinloch Green at 3.30pm. However, the focus of the children’s events is just taking part, having fun and letting the little ones enjoy the thrill.
The two main events kick off at 10.30 am on Sunday May 26. Nicola McKerral will lead the adults’ warm-up at 10.15am, followed by a compulsory race briefing. Nearly 1000 runners will set-off together before the races branch apart at the Dellwood Hotel. Marshals will be on hand around the route to keep runners on the right track, with the marshal briefing taking place in the Victoria Hall at 9am on race day.
Both races start together at the War Memorial on the esplanade. The 10k race goes around three sides of scenic Campbeltown Loch, and is mainly flat. People of all fitness levels and ages are encouraged to try to achieve a personal best, with many participants power walking around the course or entering for charity.
The half marathon route leaves the town through the rural countryside. It includes approximately one kilometre on the hard sandy beach of Machrihanish/Westport, taking in spectacular views across the water to the isles of Islay, Jura and Gigha. The final mile of both races is on a slight down gradient into town, through the centre, to main street, where runners will be greeted by crowds of locals cheering them to the last, and the commentator will announce all finishers by name as they cross the finish line.
The prizes are awarded in accordance with UK Athletics Rules with the winner being individual in the specified age category with the fastest gun to chip time- i.e. the first in the specified age category to cross the finish line wins the prize. In the event of anyone requiring any medical assistance, professionals from Inverness-based Hebe Highland First Aid will once again be on
hand to help.
David Armour, Kintyre’s main fundraiser for the Beatson Cancer Charity, will be this year’s sweeper for the 10K race. He will be joined by Rhona Kelly with the yellow collection buckets raising money for the Beatson. As always, the familiar voice of MC John Armour will be heard cheering on competitors as they cross the line. Everyone is invited to the finish line on Kinloch Green after the race and before the prize giving for complimentary refreshments, sandwiches and famous Danish pastries from Argyll Bakeries.
