New men’s records were set during last Sunday’s Mull of Kintyre Half Marathon and 10k (MOKRun) – see back page – but the annual event’s youngest competitors were not to be outdone, with a new junior record also smashed.
On Saturday, the day before the main races, MOKRun mascot MOK Coo cheered the hundreds of young runners who took to Kinloch Green to compete across various distances: one lap (500m) for five- to six-year-olds; one lap for seven- to eight-year-olds; two laps (1km) for nine- to 10-year-olds, three laps (1.5km) for 11- to 12-year-olds; and four laps (2km) for 13- to 14-year-olds.
While having fun is the main aim of the junior event, the top three boys and girls for each age group were presented with prizes.
Each and every young person who took part did themselves proud but Niamh McSporran proved herself to be a record-breaker, smashing the 11-12 girls’ course record by crossing the line in six minutes and 14 seconds.
A MOKRun spokesperson said: “Thank you to our sponsors: Jog Scotland, Campbeltown Running Club, Stewart Balfour & Sutherland, Mairi Ireland Fitness, MACC Gym, Glenbarr Farms, Archie Johnston, AM Transport and McKinven & Colville.
“Thanks also to the Co-op for donations and Olfactory Candles UK and Sweetie Galore for the goody bag treats, and Mark Leishman, Nicola McKerral, compère Lindsay Ramsay, Calum Scott, Ailie Goddard and Chris from Entry Central for all their help.
“We owe gratitude to all family and friends for their help in packing bags and setting up on the day, and the young fire cadets and marshals for keeping everyone safe.
“Most of all, we thank all the young people who took part and enjoyed their runs, which makes all our hard work worthwhile.”
