Isle of Mull Gardening Club was treated to a visit from a celebrity guest on Monday (February 17), as a presenter from the BBC’s popular gardening programme Beechgrove came to talk to the group.
Calum Clunie, who has presented Beechgrove since 2021, has always been very keen to visit Mull, so when the gardening club reached out to him last year it was the perfect opportunity.
Many members of the Isle of Mull Gardening Club are fans of the show and eagerly filled Salen Church for the event.
The club was overjoyed by Calum’s agreement to host a talk at their monthly meeting, and how happy he was to offer helpful tips and tricks to members.
He treated attendees to a presentation about his horticultural journey, which began as a simple hobby he shared with his grandparents and blossomed into TV stardom.
Calum has won many prizes during his time as a gardener growing his own veg. The first at the age of just 15, was also at the first agricultural show he had ever entered.
Club secretary Susan Brackenbury said: "There was a good audience and everyone thoroughly enjoyed Calum’s very entertaining talk, which included plenty of amusing anecdotes.
"We learnt how his fascination with gardening, and in particular growing show produce and flowers, began and about his journey to becoming a member of the Beechgrove Garden presenting team.
"Calum had been keen to visit Mull since his grandparents showed home videos of their holiday here a number of years ago.
"He spent the following day taking a drive round the north of the island, including calling at Calgary beach, before getting a late afternoon ferry back to the mainland.
"The Gardening Club looks forward to welcoming Calum back to Mull in the not too distant future."
Isle of Mull Gardening Club meet once a month in Salen Church for guest talks or practical gardening sessions, they also plan visits to notable local gardens.
