The school was taking part in the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) programme, managed by The Wood Foundation, which empowers young people to be active citizens, raising awareness and funds for charities in their local areas.
Members of CalMac’s local team had mentored each of the finalist teams, providing vital industry expertise in areas such as business case, creativity, communication, and teamwork.
Students Caleb Nonhebel, Cailean MacLean, Gabriel Stanley-Wright and Theo Mace Munteanu impressed the judges with their business case to support Aros Hall in Tobermory. The hall is used by many local groups and the funding will pay for ongoing refurbishment.
One of the pupils said: "I enjoyed taking part in YPI as it gave me and friends the chance to give something back to the community."
Shelley Carmichael, headteacher of Tobermory High, added: "We are incredibly proud of all our YPI finalists who showcased their charities, presenting convincing cases and making the decision on choosing the winning group a difficult one for the judges.
"The triumphant team produced an excellent and humorous video highlighting their arguments, and were delighted to be able to present £3000 to the Aros Hall. Well done to all involved!”
