A popular Mull coach driver is running 310km throughout January to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK and the island has rallied behind him.
West Coast Motors driver Andrew Noble has only lived on Mull for a year and a half, but he has quickly lit up the island community with his upbeat attitude. “Everyone knows me as the happy and jolly bus driver,” he said.
This month, he is channelling his positive energy into a physically demanding fundraiser that will see him attempt a 10k run every day in January.
Run the Month: Marathon Edition is a running challenge tasking people to run 26.2 miles throughout January to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK, but Andrew is going above and beyond and aims to complete 310km (192.625) miles by the end of the month.
Raising awareness of the charity is important to Andrew as his own uncle was diagnosed with prostate cancer five years ago.
He said: "We all know that men don’t really talk about their health issues, but by raising awareness of prostate cancer people can get diagnosed earlier, which can lead to better treatment outcomes and a higher chance of survival."
With a busy schedule driving passengers from Fionnphort to Craignure and covering other routes, Andrew has had to squeeze his runs in before work or during lunch breaks which has been a "complete shock to the body".
"Sometimes I need a helping hand off my driver’s seat at the end of the day," he added.
Battling the ice, snow and rain while running the single track roads has been an added hurdle, but despite some slips Andrew is determined to keep on going.
He has now smashed his initial £500 fundraising target and has already raised more than £1,000 for Prostate Cancer UK.
Andrew said he is "over the moon" to have raised so much and he has been blown away by the generous donations, encouragement and help from other islanders.
"I don’t have social media so I’ve relied on the island to share and support what I’m doing," he said. "It’s a very special place."
He is now already thinking to the future and later this year he will be completing another fundraising challenge to raise money and awareness for breast cancer.
