Thurso 2
Fort William 3
North Caledonian League
A late Marty Munro winner was the cherry on the top of a 3-2 win as Fort William beat Thurso in the North Caledonian League on Saturday.
In a closely contested battle, the home side were the first to draw blood when Liam Bain opened the scoring for Thurso after half an hour.
Ten minutes later, however, Martin Munro danced through the defence to set up Liam Martin, the stoical attacker, who fired home with a rough and tumble finish.
As half-time loomed, Munro bagged his opening goal for the afternoon which saw Fort William go into the break 2-1 ahead.
The opening of the second half was as cagey as the opening of the first had been.
After 15 minutes, however, Kian Mackay levelled the scores for the Vikings.
As the game looked like it might be heading for a draw, Munro scored an outlandish winner with only minutes left on the clock.
A delighted assistant manager Ross Tough said: “The fact we’ve managed to pick up a victory on such a challenging pitch is pleasing.
“It took us 30 minutes to settle into the game but once we got our first goal we were by far the superior side for the remainder of the game.
“Martin Munro today showed why he has been such an important player for Fort William over the years with an outstanding individual performance, setting up the first goal and scoring the other two.
“After a difficult start to the season for him battling injury, it’s good to have him back in the side.”
Manager Kyle Redpath was also upbeat about the result. “A well deserved victory today,” he said.
“We controlled the majority of the game and created a lot of chances. And there were quite a few decisions that didn’t go our way.
“The boys battled hard and got the deserved goal at the end which made the long trip back to Fort William much more enjoyable.
“We have a tough couple of games coming up with back-to-back matches against league leaders Halkirk, but if we can get a settled squad we can compete with anyone in the league.”
This Saturday, November 16, Fort William host Halkirk at Claggan Park with a 1pm kick off.
