Ms Melville has been teaching for 23 years and has spent almost all of this time teaching through the medium of Gaelic. She will be leaving her current head teacher and Gaelic medium teacher post in Argyll and Bute to return to Highland. Ms Melville previously worked at Tongue Primary School in Sutherland.
Commenting on her appointment, she said: 'I am very happy to be returning to Highland to take up a post in a dedicated Gaelic school.
'As a parent with two children in BSGLA, I am aware of the positive ethos and sense of pride in the Gaelic language across the school community. I look forward to getting to know you all in the coming months.
'I am very much looking forward to coming to Bun-Sgoil Ghàidhlig Loch Abar and working with staff, pupils, parents and partners to progress our vision for the school.'
Education chairman councillor John Finlayson added: 'I am delighted to welcome Marissa as the new head teacher of BSGLA. Her experience in GME will, I am sure, enable her to hit the ground running in the lead up to a very busy time of year and I look forward to visiting the school and to meeting Marissa in her new role.'
