Oban Toy Cupboard has launched a service to help new parents learn how to carry their babies safely – and avoid costly buying mistakes.
The sling library was launched on June 12 at the Church of Scotland Centre, Glencruitten Road.
It aims to help new mums and dads learn how to safely use the stretch-wrap that comes in every baby box – and to try other baby slings before stumping up the cash for their own.
Rhoda Thomson, a toy librarian at Oban Toy Cupboard, explained: "We wanted to offfer parents the chance to try out different slings and find out how to use them properly before they buy. It’s all about saving money and reducing waste."
Oban Toy Cupboard is just one of hundreds of community groups celebrating small swaps for the planet to mark Great Big Green Week.
The Toy Cupboard has been running for more than 30 years. It started as a place to donate and borrow toys but has become a hub for advice, support and saving money. The organisation also runs a nappy library, providing reusable nappy brands for parents to try.
Rhoda said: "We have a suggested donation for our services, but will always be able to offer toys and services for free if people are really pushed. You can try out the slings and nappies regardless of what money you have.
"There’s no judgment. Things can be overwhelming when you are a new parent. To have someone that’s used to these products is really helpful, rather than trawling the internet for hours."
But it’s not just about saving money. Many of the Toy Cupboard’s 300 members come along to try and cut down on waste and help the planet.
"Parents like to see what we have got and try things, which allows them to be more selective," Rhoda added. "A lot of waste is created by people buying the wrong things."
The service now offers birthday bundles - a brilliant low-cost, low-waste option for birthday parties. Members can borrow a bundle that includes soft-play and tactile toys for £10.
