A group of Arran High School netball players quickly assembled a junior and a senior team to compete against two visiting teams from Stewarton Netball Club.
Held at Auchrannie Sports Hall on Saturday May 11, the first match saw the junior team face Stewarton’s U13 side. In the first quarter, the two teams scored goal for goal as each tried to assert their dominance on the court.
For many of the players, this was their first time playing a match and it was the first time they had all played together as a team.
The second quarter saw them begin to pull away from the visiting side. Strong offensive and defensive performances by mid-courters Isla McKinnon and Eva McRae enabled the team to continuously feed the ball to Evie Steele, Julieta Gray and Alyssia Byrne who were in exceptional form in the shooting circle.
Molly Young, Jenny Monteith, Nara Wood and Aisling Coyle were fantastic in defence, keeping the visiting side’s attempts at goals to a minimum.
Arran won the match with an impressive 18-5 scoreline with captain, Evie Steele, being awarded player of the match by Stewarton.
With the daunting task of following the juniors’ win, a nervous senior team took to the court against Stewarton’s U15 side with many of the Arran girls playing out of position due to a number of absences.
The practiced Stewarton side swiftly took control of the game with precise, quick passing and strategic positioning, gaining a 10-2 lead at half time.
After a rousing team-talk by captain Harriett Lucas and a reshuffle by the coaches, Arran came out flying, seemingly undaunted by the near impossible task of catching Stewarton.
Feisty, determined performances by mid-courters Kitty Townsend and Annie McKelvie saw the ball move swiftly down court to shooters Ruby Johnson and Olivia Morgan-Lee who dominated in the shooting circle.
And outstanding defence by Harriet Lucas, Grace Popplewell and Lily Harmer saw the visitors struggling to make headway in the second half.
As time ticked down and Arran crept closer to Stewarton, the intensity increased with one umpire calling for the Arran supporters to quieten down as no-one could hear her over the cheering.
The final whistle saw the teams draw 15-15 with shooter Olivia Morgan-Lee awarded player of the match by her Stewarton counterparts.
Coaches Rachel Flaherty and Michelle Williamson were immensely proud of both teams. They were impressed with each players’ individual performance and each team’s cohesive and determined effort which surpassed everyone’s expectations for the day.
The teams are now looking forward to taking part in an outdoor tournament in September, hosted by the Stewarton club.
