Oban 196-7 (A Bird 54; M Parry 47)
Comrie 197-6
A new look Oban cricket side travelled to Comrie in Perthshire for their first match of 2024 on Saturday June 2 and lost a tight game when Comrie scrambled the winning run from the last ball of the match to edge victory.
Oban travelled with some new faces and new skipper Archie Bird who, before the game, unveiled new team shirts kindly supplied by sponsors Tilhill Forestry.
Batting first, Oban started well with Mark Parry and Josh Tristram opening.
With the score on 30, Tristram was bowled for 13 but Mark Parry continued and fell just three short of what would have been a deserved 50, being adjudged LBW for 47. Eric Roberts and Seth Bird scored more useful runs before Archie Bird played a great first innings as captain, making a fine 54.
Jahed Khan and Koyes Khan, both now based in the Central Belt, played well late in the innings to take Oban to a more than respectable total of 196 for seven from their 35 overs.
Comrie are an experienced team, however, and began their reply well with solid contributions from all their top order taking the score beyond 100.
Oban’s bowling, though, was tight, with some valuable wickets from Jack Whiteley, Jawahar Kallas and Archie Bird keeping the game close as it entered the last few overs.
Finally, with the scores tied, Comrie scrambled a run from the final ball of the game to edge a great match by the finest of margins.
Oban’s next game is in Taynuilt on Sunday June 9 when they welcome Fort Augustus.
