Oban, Scotland — Oban has officially been crowned “Town of the Year” at the 2024 Scotland Loves Local Awards, a prestigious accolade recognizing the Argyll town’s outstanding community spirit, resilience, and innovation. This well-deserved title acknowledges how the town’s people have banded together to “reinvent” Oban, turning it into a bustling, supportive hub for residents and visitors alike.
The Benefits of Shopping and Staying Local in Oban
Over the past year, Oban has attracted global attention and enjoyed a significant economic boost as a featured port in the world-renowned Clipper Round The World Yacht Race. This event, which also stops in cities like Washington DC and Cape Town, has generated millions for the local economy, introducing Oban to an international audience destination in Scotland.
Yet, Oban’s success is not just about attracting tourists; it’s about creating a sustainable, welcoming town for all who live, work, and visit here. Winning “Town of the Year” is a recognition of Oban’s forward-thinking approach to revitalising its community as well as the efforts of local business, organisations, and residents who work tirelessly to support one another. The achievement underscores the importance of shopping and staying local to keep the spirit of Oban alive and thriving.
Shopping and staying local not only helps our town economically but also strengthens the ties that bind our community. Every pound spent in Oban recirculates within the local economy, supporting jobs, fostering local growth, and ensuring that our town continues to thrive. Moreover, local shopping supports small businesses, which are often owned by individuals with a deep personal commitment to the town.
This year’s Scotland Loves Local Awards highlighted the impact of communities like Oban that are revitalising their town centres through initiatives that benefit all. Supporting local businesses, services, and events helps protect Oban’s unique character while contributing to environmental sustainability by reducing the need for travel and large-scale shipping. Every visit to a local shop, café, or business is an investment in Oban’s future. Oban Business Improvement District, BID4Oban is passionate about promoting the message ‘Shop local, Support local and Use local’ and now, in the run-up to Christmas, shop local is as important as ever. Chief executive Andrew Spence said: ‘It goes without saying that supporting local businesses, restaurants, pubs, shops and services is key to the prosperity of our town.’
If you’re still having doubts about buying from smaller shops, using your local hair salons or making the trip to any local shops, here are five ways that shopping locally can help you, your neighbours and your surrounding community.
