Oban Rotary Club will be hoping for some excellent weather this coming Sunday, June 2, when due to the generosity of the committee and members of Glencruitten Golf Club the Rotary will be hosting its annual amateur golf competition at the local course. This will be the 38th Oban Times sponsored tournament and it is expected that in addition to local golfers there will be teams entering from Dunblane, Glasgow and Stirling.
Since the original competition in 1985 the event has raised in excess of £230,000 which makes it the main fundraiser for Oban Rotary Club as it accounts for approximately 60 to 70 per cent of the club’s income. As the expenses of the tournament are kept to an absolute minimum this ensures that all the funds generated from the tournament are utilized for the benefit of local good causes and charities and youth organisations. It supports a variety of sporting and youth activities in the local area, such as school breakfast clubs and school trips, the highly accomplished Oban High School Pipe Band, the Laurinburg School Exchange and junior golf and other sporting coaching locally. The Dove Centre and the North Argyll Young Carers Centre have also benefited financially from the funds raised as the result of the Am Am tournament.
Normally the financial assistance provided by the Rotary is in the region of £500 but on occasions larger sums are made available to deserving causes if there is a particular need which has been identified and Oban Rotary can assist.
Without the generosity of local businesses who provide sponsorship and donations the Am Am would not be the successful event it has turned out to be. In addition to the Oban Times, PDK Shellfish Ltd has once again kindly agreed to act as the event’s principal sponsor, with Aggregate Industries also renewing its very generous main sponsorship of last year. As always MacQueen Brothers has also confirmed its continuing support. Additionally on the day of the event a raffle is held to support the work of Mary’s Meals. This local charity supports children throughout the world and due to the efforts of President Ciorsti Baxter and her Brownies the magnificent sum of £1,305 was raised last year and donated to the charity.
To ensure that the day runs efficiently every member of Oban Rotary will be participating, and for the fourth year running, the Oban detachment of the Sea Cadets will be acting as ball spotters. This should ensure continuity of play which enables the competition to run smoothly and to time.
The decision by Oban Rotary to originally run the Am Am was as a result of the local club receiving an invitation from Dunblane Rotary to send a team to their inaugural Am Am. The decision was taken that Oban Rotary could do likewise and the competition has gone from strength to strength. It is pleasing that Dunblane Rotary will once again have a team participating in this year’s tournament.
Due to the great efforts of the greenkeeping staff, the course at Glencruitten looks to be in excellent condition and if the weather gods are favourable it should be an excellent competition with low scoring anticipated.
It is hoped that in the region of 100 sponsors and some 35 teams will participate in this year’s event and Oban Rotary would wish to thank all those businesses, sponsors and participants for their support.
