Oban’s karate athletes returned with an outstanding clutch of medals from the Highland Karate Association’s annual championships in Inverness at the weekend.
The nine-strong contingent from Oban won ten gold medals, eight silvers and one bronze at Culloden Academy on Saturday November 16.
The Highland Karate Association, which has been in existence for more than 45 years, attracts competitors from all around Scotland and England.
Oban Shotokan, "the new kids on the block", were "very much delighted and feel very honoured to be invited to participate", said head coach Robert Neil.
"The standards from such a long-established association are very high and we were under no illusion as to what to expect."
There were two individual events: Ippon Kumite - one full point or two half point scores to win, then Nihon Kumite - two full points or four half points to win. These were followed by team rotation.
"The bouts were fast and furious: kicks, punches, blocking and sparring at each other with loud screams of the ’KIA!’, hoping to catch the attention of the referee when they landed their techniques to score," reported Robert.
"Each bout, lasting two minutes, seemed like it would never end as they continued relentlessly, struggling to keep composure as they got tired.
"But there can only be one winner and Oban Juniors were certainly in no mood to be going home empty handed. They gave their all and were rewarded for their hard work, determination and confidence throughout the day.
"A special thank you to all the parents for your valued support."
He added that Oban Shotokan have had "a great year and great results" from the World Union of Karate-Do Federation (WUKF) Scottish Championships last June and Kanzen Scottish International in Dundee, with both coaches gaining Scottish titles alongside some of their students.
They are hoping to progress next session by entering more national and international competitions.
