I have read the series of articles in the Oban Times that you have written about the proposed Visitor Levy and I listened to the webcast of the council meeting on December 20 when the subject was discussed and, like some of the councillors, I am unhappy with the consultation as I believe the local residents do not have sufficient detail to (a) be interested enough to respond and (b) because they will believe that this levy will be on tourists and will not affect them.
I also believe that the consultation is unlikely to reach the tourists so that they can respond.
The name is a misnomer as a Visitor Levy implies it will only be applied to visitors whereas it will equally apply to local resident who pays council tax to Argyll & Bute Council and who would not recognise him/herself as a visitor.
Islanders having to stay overnight in Oban because the ferry has broken down or can’t run because of weather conditions will have to pay it, workers working away from their home in Argyll and having to stay overnight will have to pay it, and Argyll residents visiting family or holidaying elsewhere in the region and staying in accommodation will have to pay it. They’re not visitors, they’re residents. A more correct title would be an ‘Accommodation Tax’ and if this was more fully explained I believe it would result in a far bigger response from residents.
My own concern is the likely effect on my business, which is a touring caravan site that caters for touring caravans, motorhomes, campervans and trailer tents, as over the last few years (Covid years apart) we are experiencing a reduction in visitor numbers each year due, I believe, to the large number of motorhomes/campervans wild camping in the immediate area and I believe that the imposition of the Visitor Levy on those staying on organised sites will have the effect of turning many more visitors to wild camping and exacerbate the problems that local communities are experiencing and which have frequently been reported in the press.
I have sent a letter to every Argyll & Bute councillor to advise them of my views and the likely effect if the Visitor Levy is applied to caravans and motorhomes staying on authorised sites.
Keep up your reporting and hopefully sense will prevail.

We wish to record our grateful thanks to the emergency workers of Argyll SSEN who performed a miracle in restoring power to us so quickly in the face of very serious and widespread disruption and danger caused by Storm Eowyn.
However the recent lengthy power cuts should provide important lessons. During and after the storm not only did we lose power, we also lost mobile phone coverage at the very time when it would have been most useful.
Regrettably it has frequently proved to be only a fair weather friend. Fortunately the land lines were still working [for those not transferred to fibre], and available for emergency use. One lesson from the storm is that removing such a durable network will be an act of unbelievable folly, and should be stopped immediately.
Furthermore I can report that in our rural retreat we coped very well without the TV, internet and central heating etc. We could have continued this way for a pretty long time, thanks to our woodburner – which kept us warm and also provided a very useful hotplate for cooking and hot drinks – paraffin lamps and primus stove, a good supply of candles and our diesel-powered vehicles.
Given recent international concerns, there is also a political dimension to this. If enough of us can resist the blandishments of the total electrifiers, the likes of messrs Putin, Xi Jinping, Musk and Zuckerberg will have a huge headache as they continue their efforts to sabotage our infrastructure and our will to fight for decency and democracy. But the writing is on the wall. CAVEAT EMPTOR!
