The Argyll and Bute Climate Hustings took place at Lochgilphead Joint Campus on Monday night.
A spokeswoman for the Palestine Solidarity group said: “We are here to help people be aware that the ongoing genocide in Gaza is very much a climate issue and it’s not one that should be avoided by potential elected MPs.”
Time for Change hosted the hustings event with questions for Westminster parliamentary candidates Brendan O’Hara, SNP, Alan Reid, LibDem, and Hamish Maxwell, Labour. Conservative candidate Amanda Hampsey had to cancel due to personal reasons.
The final question of the evening asked candidates, “You have all acknowledged the link between Britain’s colonial past and the current climate crisis we are experiencing. If you are elected, will you stop bomb sales to Israel?”
In short, all three candidates answered “yes.”
Brendan O’Hara said: “I have on numerous occasions demanded we stop arming Israel. I was one of the first to call on the floor of the Houses of Parliament for an immediate cease fire.
“There is no reason on earth why the UK continues to license arms sales to Israel.”
Alan Reid said: “The Liberal Democrats party believes we should not be issuing licenses to companies to export arms to any country that has a bad human rights record.”
Hamish Maxwell said: “We should not be selling arms to a country accused of perpetrating such crimes. Both of these countries deserve peace and it’s time for a cease fire.”
