Oban Raven Laura Mackay is flying high after the majority of her fellow flock voted her Player of the Year (POTY) for 2023.
Votes were cast in December following a suggestion that the players themselves selected their POTY rather than the team coach as had been the case previously.
Laura was overwhelmingly the choice of her fellow team mates.
Having competed in every single competition in 2023 Laura has rarely missed a training session and is a most dedicated Raven and supporter of her fellow players.
Voting was anonymous with players being given the opportunity to comment on their decisions. Reasons included:
“Her improvement is incredible and annoying. She is so kind and puts in so much effort. Without her the team would be very different. Laura is a great addition.”
“She always does everything with a smile.”
“She has gone from being rather nervous in tournaments to having a massive impact on the team. Great teammate.”
“Easy vote. Always positive and happy.”
“A great organiser,”
In recognition of the feat Laura was presented with an Oban Ravens hip flask and the newly commissioned Ethel Johnston Memorial Trophy by Ethel’s husband Andrew and three out of her four children, Harry, Charlie, Jack.
Ethel passed away in September 2023 and was in healthier times a fierce and competitive member of the team.
The family have also kindly agreed to sponsor the Ravens first hosted competition of 2024.
Training for Oban Ravens began last week after the festive break and the squad return to WISPS (Women in Scotland Playing Squash) action on Sunday January 28.
