Plockton Horticultural Society held its annual ’Make a Gingerbread House’ competition on December 7 in Plockton Hall. There was an amazing display and the winner was five-year-old Alice MacKenzie who had a little help from her uncle Malcolm MacKenzie.
The annual concert by Plockton Music School was held on December 7 at Plockton High School. Despite bad weather, a large crowd attended and enjoyed the evening.
Plockton and District Horticultural and Arts and Crafts Society organised Donald’s annual festive workshop in Plockton Hall on December 11 when Donald Mackintosh demonstrated how to make spectacular table decorations. Everyone in attendance enjoyed the event.
The big attraction in Plockton in December was Ewen and Sybil’s Christmas lights on their house, 2 Frithard Road. Ewen put them up before going into Raigmore Hospital, Inverness, for a knee operation on December 11. He is now home and doing well.
Hayleigh Bloomfield, 27, daughter of Stephen and Morven Bloomfield, Burnside, Plockton, who is a staff nurse at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow, has received national recognition for her work to create a pain management protocol for patients living with Motor Neurone Disease.
She works in the neurology department alongside fellow nurses, doctors and pharmacy teams.
Hayleigh’s new written protocol has been adopted by HEPMA, NHS Scotland’s digital tool for presenting and managing medicines within hospital environments.
Hayleigh also created a poster explaining the development of the new protocol and won best poster presentation at the recent British Association of Neuroscience Nurses conference. Well done Hayleigh.
Plockton and District Community Council met in Plockton Hall on Monday December 16.
Among the items discussed were:
November 5 bonfire and fireworks: A record crowd attended and there was a profit of around £1,500, of which £1,000 was donated to Lochalsh Leisure Centre. The community council thanked the 31 people who were involved in the event which was praised by the police.
Lochalsh Leisure Centre: Mary Gollan updated the meeting on progress. A new manager is in post. It is hoped the gym will re-open on January 6 and the pool by the end of January.
20mph speed limits: Consultation on proposed 20mph speed limits closes on March 25 2025. The meeting felt the 20mph limit should run from Burnside through the village and cut out the 400m section of 30mph between the two schools.
Primary school: This is now located at the high school but complaints had been received about toilet provision and inadequate outdoor areas for children to play as the grass was waterlogged.
Duirinish Bridge: This needs to be resurfaced.
All-weather pitch: The Highland Council has appointed a contractor to improve the floodlighting. The community council is seeking details of the Highland Council’s planned mainenance for the pitch.
Janitor’s house: Councillor Biz Campbell said she hoped it would be submitted for planning permission at the next meeting in six weeks.
New Cooper Street houses: The community council has no objections.
Visitor/tourist levy: There is a deadline of February 7 2025 for anyone to respond to the consultation.
Tourist Place Plan: No progress on this plan.
