Oban Lorne Women 26
Wigtonshire Ladies 12
Wigtownshire kicked off the game on a beautiful spring day at Glencruitten.
Oban gathered the ball from kick-off and instantly made ground with a strong carry from Grace McLean supported by the forward pack.
Oban continued the pressure on Wigtownshire with strong carries from Ellie Picken and Julie Campbell, bringing them to within five metres of the try line.
A cracking tackle and counter tuck from the Wigtown pack turned Oban over and the visitors cleared their lines.
Oban re-gathered the ball and after quick hands to the backs made ground with strong running from Kirsty Sinclair, then a crash ball to Campbell who broke through the Wigtown lines scoring under the posts. Picken converted - 7-0.
Oban got a scrum in their opposition half and, after a dominant scrum, Anna Bain shipped the ball quickly to the backs where after good inter-linking play between Sinclair and Amy Gibson, the ball was passed to Rachel MacDonald who ran a lovely line down the wing and placed the ball down under the posts.
Picken converted - 14-0.
After a knock-on from the kick-off, Wigtownshire had the attacking scrum and after a quick ball they made a break and would have scored had it not been for an excellent try saving tackle from full back Katie Hamilton.
Oban turned and attacked and after inter-linking play between the forwards and backs, MacDonald broke through the line again to score in the corner. 19-0
With the clock approaching half time, the Oban women had to put in a strong defensive set with massive hits by MacMillan and the forward pack. After drawing the defence in, Wigtown shipped the ball wide fast and with some quick feet scored under the posts. 19-7.
The second half resumed and after another strong defensive period and crunching tackles from Jordan MacIntyre and Arden Binne, Campbell made an excellent turnover. Another series of great interlinking play and they were over the whitewash but unfortunately the ball was held up.
Another period of great play from the Oban backs put them in an excellent position to score, but great defence from Wigtownshire held the ball up.
Oban regathered the ball from the re-start and after big carries from forwards MacMillan, McIntyre and Speirs, they got the ball to Campbell who crashed through in her trademark style to score under the posts. MacInnes converted - 26-7
A penalty for offside against Oban saw Wigtownshire opting for the scrum instead of kicking and they managed to get the ball away fast to the wing and despite McInnes’ best efforts to stop them, they ran in to score in the corner. 26-12
Oban closed out the game with strong defence and great team work, not letting the visitors back into the game for the final quarter.
It was a brilliant win for the women at home. Congratulations to Lindsay MacMillian who was awarded player of the match. Thanks to Oban Distillery for sponsoring the player of the match.
