At a meeting this month, the council's community services committee heard initial steps have been taken to progress plans for a new school and that a further report will come before the committee before the end of the year.
It comes after a motion submitted by Councillor Donald Kelly, requesting an initial report on the potential for a proposal which would allow for an initial business case to be formulated for a new primary school, was passed at a meeting of the Mid Argyll, Kintyre and the Islands area committee in December.
Councillor Kelly said: “I am pleased that, at long last, the council is taking the issue of a new primary school seriously.
“I fully appreciate we are only at the start of this process and it won't happen overnight, however, after much campaigning, we are starting to move in the right direction.”
Councillor John Amour, who seconded Councillor Kelly's motion, said he, too, was pleased to see progress being made.
He added: “We need to see a full report and a vision to take it forward to consult with the parents, staff and wider community in Campbeltown on the future of primary school provision in the town.”
